Understanding Getafe’s Window and Why Adrian Liso is a Vital Reinforcement

It has been a busy summer for Getafe. The Madrid-based side have parted ways with various veterans like Juan Bernat and Allan Nyom, sold Omar Alderete to Premier League side Sunderland, and could be set to lose another key starter in Christantus Uche. In terms of incomings, however, they’ve added several new signings like Davinchi, Juanmi, and Adrián Liso.

Adrián Liso comes from his breakthrough season at Real Zaragoza in La Liga 2, scoring 6 goals and providing 2 assists. This has led Getafe to sign the 20-year-old winger on a loan deal with an option to buy, where he’ll be looking to fill the void of players like Álvaro Rodríguez and Carles Pérez in attack.

Data

Context: Adrián Liso was formed in the academy of Real Zaragoza and was promoted to the first team last summer.

In this chart, we can observe that Adrián Liso has not been decisive in the final third with low values for xG and xA per 90, as well as key passes. Nonetheless, he is a good player on the ball, ranking above the 65th percentile for progressive carries and dribbles per 90.

Furthermore, he is a player who likes to cross the ball frequently, ranking in the 70th percentile for this action and is above average in terms of its accuracy. This tells us that he is a player who likes to stay out on the wing and put crosses into the box, rather than move inside and receive the ball between the lines.

This image shows Liso’s positioning this season, and as we can see, he likes to stay on the touchline, inverting very rarely.

On the Ball

In the footage, we can observe that Adrián Liso is a very direct player who, at first glance, wants to move forward and take on his man down the wing. He tends to reach the byline and put low driven crosses into the box, where he can be more precise, rather than crossing the ball from far away. In addition, his movement off the ball is quite good, able to catch the full back off guard and run in behind, where he can either shoot or cross the ball.

Off the Ball

Liso is a very disciplined and hard-working winger who has also played as a left-back at times for Zaragoza. He is a great player when it comes to pressing the opponent, given his strength and speed, which allows him to cut off passes quickly. In addition, he is an active player when his team loses the ball or are in a low block, he is always involved in recovering the ball or helping to defend.

Finally, an important attribute of his is his strength and ability to win loose balls and duels. For instance, in this occasion, thanks to his strength, he is able to leave the full back behind and generate an opportunity for his team.

Overall, Liso is a very direct player who likes to run down the wing and put crosses into the box; however, his skillset on the ball is quite limited. Nonetheless, the most important part of his game is his out-of-possession work, as he is very disciplined, and his athleticism and strength are important parts of his success as a football player.

In this chart, we can observe that Coba has performed very well despite it being his breakthrough season in La Liga. However, we have to also take into account that he is being compared to midfielders rather than wingers.

Either way, he ranks highly for carries and successful take-ons, while also performing many crosses. Furthermore, he is a decisive player in the final third, being above average for npxG + xAG, goal-creating actions, and shot-creating actions after a pass and after a take on.

Finally, he ranks highly for tackles + interceptions, indicating he is a disciplined player and works out of possession. For next year, Adrián Liso will have to fight with Coba for a spot in the starting 11.

I believe that this is an average signing, given that although he fits the style of play of coach José Bordalás and is quite similar to Coba, I doubt he has the level to perform well in La Liga. Nonetheless, as a squad player, he can be a good fit for Getafe as he works out of possession and fits the characteristics Bordalás wants in a winger, despite his limited skillset on the ball.
