Lille play host to Rennes in a crucial match in Ligue 1’s European race at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Sunday. It promises to be a thrilling affair, with the home side known for their excellence at home and Rennes coming into good form after a disappointing start to the season.

Lille come into this encounter after a midweek European match that saw them travel to face Sturm Graz in the Europa Conference League. It was a match they won handsomely 3-0, enjoying such a cushion of success that they were able to take key players, such as Jonathan David, off well before the full time whistle.
On the other hand, Rennes were knocked out of Europe by AC Milan in the previous round, with the silver lining being their ability to concentrate on their domestic performance. The Bretons are into the semi finals of the Coupe de France but paid for their progress in that competition as they were surprisingly beaten 2-1 at home by Lorient last weekend.
Julien Stephan’s side still have an outside chance of finishing in the top four if they can finish the season quickly, but these hopes lie on securing a positive result in Lille.

Match stats: Bretons to avoid defeat
The price on Rennes to avoid defeat in this game at 1.73 is huge, with numerous factors weighing in the favour of the visitors. While it’s worthwhile acknowledging Rennes’ record on the road in the league this term is unspectacular, they have only lost three of their 11 away matches. Furthermore, Les Rouge et Noir are on a five-match undefeated streak away in Ligue 1, which includes a 1-1 draw away to PSG last time out.
Lille, who do have an excellent home record, posting eight wins from 11, are coming into this game off a European match and with a squad battered by injury. Paulo Fonseca has tried to play the issues down, but the reality is that at this busy point in the season, fatigue will have an impact. This is especially likely in what’s set up to be a hard-fought match.
Rennes fell to their first Ligue 1 defeat in 85 days, losing 2-1 to Lorient.

Although these two teams are among the highest-scoring in Ligue 1, backing a game with lots of goals does not seem a wise move. LOSC have conceded only four home goals all season while Rennes have leaked only 10 on their travels.
Prediction:
Rennes +1 Handicap @ 1.73
Shooting stats: Boom or bust for David
Jonathan David is the shortest-priced player to have a shot on target in the Lille squad. Averaging 1.64 per 90, this is not a great surprise but the price of 1.14 on the Canadian testing Steve Mandanda in the Rennes goal at least once is not particularly attractive.
Indeed, David has only had shots on target in four of his last nine matches. He blows very hot and cold, so backing him to have three or even four efforts on goal makes more sense. Three of his last seven matches have seen him manage four or more shots on target, so the long odds of 7.50 here are a nice outside bet.
3. Whilst Lyon and Valenciennes booked their spot in the Coupe de France semifinals after winning on penalties, Rennes blitzed past Le Puy 3-1 with Benjamin Bourigeaud setting up Arthur Theate’s opener and scoring a brace.@Ben_Mattinson_: https://t.co/Aabgeim43o pic.twitter.com/QT018uW7Yu

Edon Zhegrova offers far better value for a single shot on target. The winger is priced at 1.73 and averages 1.01 per 90. He is also Lille’s second most prolific shot-taker per 90 at 3.15 and with the home side hit with injuries in attacking areas he should see plenty of minutes.
Rennes’ four main goalscorers, meanwhile, are longer odds. Perhaps the most interesting bet here is on top scorer Benjamim Bourigeaud. Priced at 1.83 to have just one shot on target, he is Rennes’ main set piece taker around the box, he has had shots on target in five of his last seven starts.
Amine Gouiri is the shortest odds at 1.62. With Desire Doue banned, he should start and will provide a threat given he has nine shots on target in his last eight outings, averaging one every 53 minutes.
Predictions:
Edon Zhegrova to have 1 or more shots on target @ 1.73
Benjamin Bourigeaud to have 1 or more shots on target @ 1.83
Amine Gouiri to have 1 or more shots on target @ 1.62
Fouls stats: Andre out to get his old friends
Look for Lille right back Tiago Santos to be involved in giving away free kicks in this match. He is likely to line up against Amine Gouiri, an attacker who loves to run with the ball and be direct. Santos has a habitually high foul count, meanwhile. In four of his last six games, he has given up multiple fouls. Odds of 1.83 on him doing so again are fair.
The closest thing to a certainty, meanwhile, is Benjamin Andre giving up at least one free kick against his former side. The combative central midfielder concedes 1.9 fouls per game on average and has committed at least one foul in 21 of his last 22 starts. At 1.13, this is a nice way to boost a bet builder.
Rennes’ chief criminals are unlikely to start. The Rennes stats show Arnaud Kalimuendo is the player with this highest foul count, with the striker posting 1.21 per 90, the only probable member of the Lille starting XI averaging over one. Given he has only committed one foul in his last seven games, he is not a recommended bet.
Left back Adrien Truffert to pick up a couple of fouls at 3.3 is interesting value, however. In his last eight starts, he has committed two fouls on four occasions, given Lille tend to win the majority of their free kicks in the wide areas – this price looks big. His direct opponent will be Edon Zhegrova, who has won at least two free kicks in six of his last 16 starts.
Predictions:
Tiago Santos to commit 2 or more fouls @ 1.83
Benjamin Andre to commit 1 or more fouls @ 1.13
Adrien Truffert to commit 2 fouls or more @ 3.3
