Is Ademola Lookman in Line for a Premier League Return This Summer?
It has recently been reported that a move back to the Premier League could be on the cards for Ademola Lookman. The player has gone from strength to strength with Atalanta, amassing an impressive 37 goals in 85 league appearances for the Serie A outfit.
According to March transfer speculations, Liverpool named Lookman as their top target in the summer window. However, they’ll have to be ready to part with a large chunk of their transfer funds, as the Nigerian’s value has risen significantly since his move to Italy.
Liverpool Reportedly Interested in Player
Lookman isn’t short of English top flight suitors after his incredible displays for Atalanta, but it currently looks like Liverpool are leading the race for his signature. Arne Slot’s tactics rely on world class wingers, and the pacey Lookman fits the bill. He could potentially be a long term replacement to Mohamed Salah and possesses many of the same attributes as the prolific Egyptian.
The Anfield club have absolutely dominated the Premier League in the 2024-25 campaign, and they were odds-on in the sports bet markets to win the division in March. However, they will need to strengthen in the summer to retain the trophy, as their main rivals will most likely bounce back in the next instalment of the competition. Could Lookman be the answer?
Nigerian Has Shone in Serie A
Lookman is no stranger to English football, having had stints at Charlton Athletic, Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City before moving to Atalanta in 2022. He never quite managed to find his footing at any of those clubs, though, and felt like a player who would never manage to reach his full potential.
Switching to Serie A has done wonders for Lookman’s career, and he’s a player reborn under Gian Piero Gasperini. Along with being a key performer in the league for the I Nerazzurri, the former Everton man also played a pivotal role in the club’s Europa League triumph in the 2023-24 campaign. He helped Atalanta pick up their first trophy in 61 years when he bagged a classy hattrick against Bayer Leverkusen.
How Would Liverpool Fans Feel About the Transfer?
It’s hard to know how Liverpool fans will feel about this transfer if it goes through. The rivalry with Everton is strong, and players don’t usually move between the clubs. Even though Lookman wouldn’t be directly transferring from the Toffees, the history is still there.
Many supporters will also remember Lookman’s less than impressive time in the top flight before. However, a lot has changed since then, and Lookman has grown into a completely different player. Indeed, his career trajectory could be compared to Salah’s. The Egyptian King didn’t hit it off in the Premier League the first time, but he transformed into an amazing player in Serie A before moving back to play for Liverpool. There’s a chance that Lookman could do the same.
If Liverpool don’t end up signing Lookman, there’s a strong chance that another club will. Lookman could be set to make a grand return to the Premier League, and the Nigerian is sure to have a point to prove.
