PSG welcome Rennes, with the Ligue 1 champions finding themselves embroiled in a rare battle for supremacy in the French top flight. Luis Enrique’s side are used to being a few points clear at this stage of the season, but currently find themselves second in the league – trailing Lens by one point.
Rennes’ focus is very much on securing a European spot, they only sit six points behind PSG in the table. This highlights the more competitive nature of Ligue 1 this term, and can result in an exciting game here, with PSG likely having one eye on their Champions League assignment to come during the week.
Match Stats: PSG still missing key stars
One of the main reasons as to why PSG haven’t been able to race to complete dominance in the early stages of the Ligue 1 season is due to key players being missing, as a direct result of their involvement in the Club World Cup. Dembele has played limited minutes in recent weeks, but still isn’t fit to start, while Desire Doue isn’t expected back for a few weeks.
This duo are such a large part of PSG’s success in recent seasons, and combined for 39 of PSG’s 92 goals in Ligue 1 last term (42.3%). This has had an impact on PSG’s goal numbers at home this season, with just 12 across their six matches – this may sound like a decent record, but it’s only a fraction of the scoring power that PSG are capable of with a fully fit squad. This is important, as PSG often rely on their scoring power to account for their risky approach at the back.
Rennes have travelled well so far this season, losing just one of their seven matches. Four of these games have ended in draws and they don’t quite have the scoring power to match PSG, despite the injuries that are still plaguing the Parisians. PSG ran out 3-1 winners in this fixture last season, though Rennes managed to come away with an xG of 1.50.

Shot Stats: Value with PSG’s midfield
PSG have had to rely on their midfield players to be more active in the final third with the absence of players like Dembele and Doue, with Neves and Vitinha showing promise when it comes to shots, shots on target and goal contributions. Both Joao Neves and Vitinha have scored hat-tricks for PSG this season, perfectly displaying how they are being asked to perform a more offensive role this term.
Neves has netted five goals across his eight appearances in Ligue 1, making him PSG’s joint top scorer in the French top flight this term. He’s averaging 2.43 shots per 90, which is a substantial increase on the 1.36 shots per 90 he averaged last season. Neves has also already eclipsed his tally for goals in Ligue 1 last season (3).
Vitinha is on penalties for PSG and hit his hat-trick against Tottenham in the Champions League just last week. He is on penalties for PSG and also has a shot average above 2.0 (2.28 per 90), as well as chipping in with six assists. It’s worth noting that 23 of Vitinha’s 24 shots in Ligue 1 have come from outside of the box.
Predictions –
Joao Neves 2+ shots @ 1.57
Vitinha 2+ shots @ 1.66
Joao Neves 1+ shots on target @ 2.10
Vitinha to score/assist @ 1.5
Vitinha 1+ shots from outside the box @ 1.8
Card Stats: Frankowski and Camara worth tracking
No player has picked up more yellow cards for Rennes this season than Przemyslaw Frankowski, with the 30-year-old picking up four yellow cards across his eight starts in Ligue 1. He’s expected to line up as a right wing-back here, putting him right in the crosshairs of Khvica Kvaratskhelia.
Kvaratskhelia is one of the best 1v1 dribblers in Europe and is averaging 2.28 successful dribbles per 90. This has led to him winning 12 fouls across his seven starts in Ligue 1 this term (1.83 per 90). He should be able to test the Polish wingback regularly.
Frankowski is likely to call for support when dealing with Kvaratskhelia, and Mendes, down his side. Camara usually plays as the LCM in Rennes’ 3-5-2 so he will also brush shoulders with Kvaratskhelia and Mendes. Camara has picked up three yellow cards this season, most recently collecting a caution in Rennes’ 1-0 win over Paris FC a few weeks back.
Predictions –
Przemyslaw Frankowski to be shown a card @ 3.10
Mahdi Camara to be shown a card @ 4.00
