Spain and France are the bookmakers’ favourites to win the tournament, despite history showing that they will have their work cut out this summer.

The World Cup has previously been staged in the Americas on eight occasions, and only one European team has lifted the trophy (Germany – 2014).

With that in mind, Brazil and Argentina are the value bets in the outright betting market. They are scheduled to meet in the semi-finals if everything goes to plan.

Five-time winners Brazil have not lifted the trophy since 2002, and will be desperate to end their drought in the final on July 19.

However, odds of 9/1 for Argentina to become the first team to defend the title since Brazil in 1962 are an extremely tempting proposition.

World Cup 2026: Group stage tips

The 48 teams have been drawn into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each section and eight best third-placed teams progressing to the last-32.

  • Group A: Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Czechia
  • Group B: Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland
  • Group C: Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
  • Group D: United States, Paraguay, Australia, Turkey
  • Group E: Germany, Curacao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador
  • Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia
  • Group G: Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand
  • Group H: Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay
  • Group I: France, Senegal, Iraq, Norway
  • Group J: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan
  • Group K: Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia
  • Group L: England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

Brazil, Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Argentina and Portugal are banker bets to finish top of their groups during the opening stage of the tournament.

The seven-fold is priced at odds of 11/2 and should deliver a winning return to punters who are willing to place this ambitious wager.

Kylian Mbappe narrowly missed out on the Golden Boot award in 2022, but is the bookies’ favourite to win the prestigious prize this time around.

However, Norway striker Erling Braut Haaland looks worth an interest at odds of 12/1 having scored 16 goals in eight qualifying games.

World Cup 2026: Miscellaneous bets

Sports bettors are spoilt for choice this summer, with reputable bookies offering a plethora of different markets on the World Cup.

They could have made a misstep in Group D, with Turkey rated as 13/8 second favourites behind the United States (11/8) to claim top spot.

Turkey’s squad is packed with players who play in the top European leagues and they are fancied to finish ahead of the US, Paraguay and Australia in their group.

Defending champions Argentina are priced at 2/1 to reach the semi-finals and look a good bet to at least make it to that stage of the tournament.

Odds of 16/1 for Argentina to face Spain in the final are also tempting given that both sides have been in excellent form over the past couple of years.
