Can Ange Postecoglou Salvage His Job and Tottenham’s Season?
It has been a rollercoaster season for Tottenham Hotspur. After finishing fifth in Ange Postecoglou’s maiden year at the helm, Tottenham struggled in the opening weeks of the 2024/25 campaign, drawing at Leicester, losing at Newcastle, and falling to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the North London Derby. Postecoglou defended himself in the post-match conference following the loss to Spurs’ crosstown rivals, stating “I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed. “I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”
Since then, Tottenham have endured an abysmal campaign in the league, dropping to 16th in the table, 16 points above the relegation zone and one point behind 15th-placed Manchester United. However, there’s reason to believe that Postecoglou’s statement could come true — Spurs have one foot in the UEFA Europa League Final after beating Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in the first leg of the semifinals. Having previously won silverware in his second season at South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar and Yokohama F. Marinos, Postecoglou has the chance to do the same this spring.
Whilst there are still three league matches left against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Brighton, it is clear that all of Tottenham’s eggs are in one basket — that of Europe’s secondary competition. If they can take care of business in Norway on Thursday, Spurs will likely face Manchester United in the final, who demolished Athletic Club 3-0 in Spain last week.
Both sides would then have 90+ minutes to determine whether they will be missing out on European football entirely or qualifying for the Champions League. But whilst United are looking to add to their voluminous trophy cabinet, Tottenham have the opportunity to end a trophy drought that has persisted since 2008 — not to mention their most prestigious trophy since they won it (then known as the UEFA Cup) 41 years ago.
Postecoglou’s long-term future is the most widely debated subject in the latest Tottenham Hotspur News with the Australian’s current deal set to expire in 2027. Spurs have been abysmal in the league, taking just five points from their last nine matches, but they nevertheless find themselves on the edge of glory. If he can lead them back to the promised and deliver their much-awaited silverware in Bilbao, Tottenham may have no other choice but to stick by Postecoglou and reward him with a brand new contract.
