West Ham United Bring Callum Wilson on Board

West Ham didn’t show too much involvement in the summer transfer window, unlike the past couple of years. But the Hammers still managed to acquire a couple of players who can potentially improve their squad. Among them are Jean-Clair Todibo, Mads Hermansen, El Hadji Malick Diouf, and Kyle Walker Peters.

But the signings didn’t stop there, as the club recently announced yet another new player. His name is Callum Wilson, who joined West Ham from Newcastle United. This well-known English striker is ready to fight for a starting position and hopefully bring plenty of goals to his new team.

Can Wilson Increase West Ham’s Premier League Odds?

Following yet another disappointing season, West Ham will once again look to get a top-half finish. If things go well, the club may dream about a place in one of the European competitions.

For this task, Graham Potter, who has left critics unconvinced since replacing David Moyes, will require a good and versatile squad that provides a couple of options in each position. To complete such a team, the manager requested an additional striker. But the club didn’t want to spend too much and decided to look for an affordable but quality player.

This is when Callum Wilson’s name popped up as his contract with Newcastle United expired by the end of June. West Ham beat the competition and secured his signature on August 2, 2025. The player received a one-year deal, which seems reasonable as he’s 33 years of age and prone to injuries.

But that doesn’t mean that Wilson won’t be of any help to the Hammers. He’s a highly experienced striker who’s capable of scoring when his team needs him the most.

Since 2020/21, he scored a goal every 143 minutes, with a shot conversion of 23.7%. This puts him in 5th place among all strikers in the competition. Hopefully, he continues to score goals and help West Ham increase their Premier League odds for a higher league position at the end of the season.

Will Callum Wilson Get a Starting Position?

The current West Ham squad only features three strikers: Niclas Fullkrug, Callum Wilson, and Callum Marshall. We don’t expect the latter to get plenty of playing time. He’s still a youngster who only played 10 minutes for West Ham.

This means that Fullkrug and Wilson will fight for the starting position. Now, the German striker joined the club from Borussia Dortmund last year, but failed to make an impression. He scored only 3 goals in 20 matches. Yet, let’s not forget that he also missed 20 appearances due to injuries.

Fullkrug’s lack of goals was the main reason why West Ham went on to get a new striker. With Wilson in the squad, the club increased its competitiveness and claimed a good option to come on from the bench.

But if Wilson stays fit and starts scoring goals, then Fullkrug will surely lose his starting position. The Englishman knows the Premier League very well, as he made 240 appearances and scored 88 goals.

On the other hand, we must not forget that Wilson hasn’t scored in the Premier League since May 4th, 2024. He spent the entire 2024/25 season without a single goal. This was his first time in his career not to score a single goal in an English top-flight season.

West Ham Targets Yet Another Striker

Recent developments on the summer transfer window indicate that West Ham is looking for yet another striker. All eyes are on Adama Bojang, who’s a Gambian forward who currently plays for Stade de Reims. He’s a 21-year-old player who’s 1.91 meters tall and can be of great help in the air.

However, we should note that he’s still an inexperienced footballer who hasn’t scored many goals in his career. Plus, he will potentially struggle when playing against the toughest defenders in the world. If West Ham decided to sign Bojang, the entire transfer should probably go for around £4.3 million.

Other rumours indicate that the Hammers will go after Rodrigo Muniz from Fulham. He’s also a striker that West Ham have admired for quite some time. But the club may struggle to sign this player, as there are strong links between him and Atalanta.

Besides the attack, West Ham is reportedly looking to strengthen other positions as well. Following a devastating 3-0 loss to Sunderland in the opening match, the Hammers have turned once again to the market.

Brazilian journalist Vene Casagrande noted that the club initiated a £45 million bid for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos. But the Blues rejected the offer as they plan on using the 18-year-old midfielder this season.

A Portuguese journalist called Pedro Almeida also said that Southampton rejected a £30 million bid for Mateus Fernandes. It seems like the Saints want at least £50 million to let their star midfielder leave. Let’s see what the final days of the summer transfer window bring for the Hammers.
