Who Will Be The Next England Coach?
In the build-up to Euro 2024, England manager Gareth Southgate stated that he would probably decide to leave his position if he was unable to guide the Three Lions to success in Germany. This means everyone is now wondering who will replace him if he does indeed step down. The FA will have plenty of managers to pick from, at home and abroad.
Southgate, 53, was appointed as England manager in 2016. And it’s fair to say that the former England U21 boss has done an excellent job. On paper, he’s the most successful Three Lions chief since Sir Alf Ramsey, and he’s taken England to the brink of success, with a penalty shootout defeat against Italy at the last Euros the closest any manager post-Ramsey has come. However, there still aren’t any trophies in the cabinet to join the 1966 World Cup.
If England were to go another tournament, where they’re one of the favourites, and come away empty handed, the suggestion from Southgate himself is that his time would be up. And as you will expect, almost every sports betting site is already working out the candidates who’d be in the running to fill what are very large shoes; and will be offering the appropriate football betting odds on the topic. But who are the runners and riders?
Graham Potter
It’s arguably Potter’s situation that makes him one of the favourites to be the next England manager. He’s been in the running for jobs and not taken them. An example of this was Leicester City recently. Is the former Chelsea manager holding out for the FA to call on him specifically?
Eddie Howe
Howe has been tipped as a future England manager for years, since back in his days overachieving at Bournemouth. The current Newcastle boss has everything the FA would be looking for, with his interpersonal skills standing out. There will also come a time when he’s taken Newcastle as far as he can.
Lee Carsley
It’s well known that Gareth Southgate managed the England U21s and then worked for the FA. He was essentially promoted from within. It’s a move that worked, and Carsley, the current U21 manager, could follow in his footsteps. He’s also knocked back approaches from other nations, such as the Republic of Ireland, to lead their senior team.
Mauricio Pochettino
The FA have appointed foreign managers previously, so they’re not afraid to do so if they feel the candidate is the right choice. Pochettino has managed two English clubs in, Spurs and Chelsea, and the Three Lions is made up of many young players, with the Argentinian renowned for his work developing them. He’s also currently out of work.
A decision on Southgate’s future will likely be made immediately after the Euro 2024 campaign comes to an end. The FA, you’d expect if the tournament goes well, will want him to stay in post. But if England come up short, a parting of ways is almost inevitable, and those mentioned above will be in the running to take over.
