Hugo Rincón: Analyzing Girona’s New Signing
Hugo Rincón scored 2 goals and provided 4 assists in La Liga 2 last season in Mirandés’ incredible season, losing the playoff final. With Athletic Club’s signing of Jesús Areso this summer and the addition of Andoni Gorosabel last season, there was no space for him in the squad, and he has been sent on loan to Girona.
In this article, we will be analysing Rincón’s performances so far this season and how he could perform at Girona.
Name: Hugo Rincón Lumbreras
Position: Right Back/ Right Wing Back
Country: Spain
Age: 22
Height: 183cm
Preferred Foot: Right
Context: Hugo Rincón was signed by Athletic Club at a young age from Osasuna, and after two seasons in their B team, he joined Mirandés on loan last season.

Radar chart of Hugo Rincón at Mirandés. (Wyscout, 2025).
In the data, we can observe that Rincón is an attacking full-back with a great dribbling ability, attempting these frequently and with a high success rate. Furthermore, he is rated quite highly for progressive carries as well, showing he is able to carry the ball from deep and progress the ball into more advanced positions.
In addition, he also ranks highly for expected assists and key passes, which shows he is also a creative player and is able to generate opportunities in attack, being important in the final third. It is also important to note that he played as a wing-back for Mirandés, allowing him more space to push up and maximize his offensive capabilities.
We can also observe he ranks in the mean for crosses per 90, indicating he is also capable of playing crosses into the box, though his success rate is quite low. This means that his passing value is what must be maximized, though he does rank very low for progressive passes, showing that he is better in the final third rather than in build-up phases. However, we should also note that Mirandés had the 4th least possession last season, with just above 45%, according to Fotmob.
In defense, we can see that he is in the mean for defensive duels per 90, with a low success rate, showing that his defensive attributes are quite poor, though this could also be affected by his role in the squad. Nonetheless, as a full back, he may have more difficulties on the defensive side of the game.

Heatmap of Hugo Rincón at Mirandés. (Sofascore, 2025).
In this image, we can observe that Rincón covered all of the space regarding the wing, mostly staying close to the touchline. In addition, he also gets close to the box, showing how offensive he really is.

In Possession
On the ball, we can observe that Hugo Rincón has good link-up play and can participate either on the wing or he is also able to interchange positions, in this action participating between the lines and playing first time to the player on the wing.
This shows his versatility and understanding of the game, however, in other moments of the game, it was seen that his ability to receive and turn to attack the backline is quite poor indicating that he is more comfortable with his face to goal.
We can also observe that his carrying and dribbling abilities are quite good, like in this example. Nonetheless, when faced in isolated positions where he has 1vs1 situations, he is quite poor, telling us that he is better at running into space rather than being a very explosive player who can generate opportunities from 1vs1 situations.
Furthermore, his decision-making in the final third is quite good. This is seen in this example where he scans perfectly that there are more opposition players in that side of the pitch and he is able to find a teammate in the center with space in front of him.
However, his crossing and 1vs1 dribbling are quite poor, suggesting that he is not a decisive player and cannot generate opportunities from key moments, but rather he needs other players to play him through in behind the defense for him to create chances.
Out of Possession
Out of possession, we can observe that his positioning is good, as seen in this example, where he sees that the center back follows the center forward, and he tracks back following the full back. However, due to his position on the pitch, I was not able to see him in many defensive actions, so it is hard to evaluate him in other defensive situations.
Overall, Hugo Rincón is an effective wing back with a good ability on the ball, both to progress the ball through his carrying ability, but also in the final third, his decision making is good, making him an asset in possession.
Nonetheless, we can say that he is not a decisive player and will not win you matches, given his poor crossing and 1vs1 dribbling abilities. I see him as a player who has good off-the-ball movement and can arrive in space to put cutbacks in; however, if his team does not offer him his role, I believe he will not perform well.
Out of possession, from what could be seen was that his positioning was good, but it is hard to evaluate him on this side of his game, though the data indicates this is not one of his strengths.

Radar charts of Arnau Martínez and Alejandro Francés. (FBref, 2025).
In this chart, we can observe last season’s right backs for Girona, and we can see they are very different from Hugo Rincón. This is due to the fact that they are excellent passers and rank highly for progressive passes, while Rincón is a great carrier of the ball, making them different profiles.
We can also observe that Francés is an aggressive defender performing many tackles, with a high number of interceptions, and being a good 1vs1 defender. Nonetheless, he offers close to nothing in attack, making him a more conservative right back rather than an attacking one.
Arnau Martínez, on the other hand, is a more conservative player out of possession, not engaging in so many duels and being less effective in interceptions and 1vs1 defending. However, he does offer more in attack, being above the mean for shot-creating actions and npxG + xAG.
For next season, both 22-year-old Arnau Martínez and 23-year-old Alejandro Francés will remain at the club, meaning both these players will be the competition for Hugo Rincón, who will add another profile to the squad and perhaps more tactical variety, being able to play in 5 at the back system.
However, for Girona, this signing does not make much sense given they already have two full-backs, and Hugo Rincón will offer very little if he does not play as a wing-back.
