Ajax welcome Feyenoord, with both clubs currently operating in the shadow of PSV who are dominating the Eredivisie once again after winning the title last season, at Ajax’s embarrassing expense.
Ajax have gotten the better of Feyenoord in recent head-to-head matches, with the home side here winning the last two meetings between the sides, the latest of which took place in February.
Match Stats: End to end game expected
Ajax have already had a chaotic season which has seen them slip down to fourth in the Eredivisie, and has seen the dismissal of Johnny Heitinga, who only managed a win percentage of 33% this season before he was sacked – with Ajax also winless in the Champions League under his reign.
They did manage to finally save face in Europe with a 4-2 win over Qarabag last time out, which at the very least lifts them off the bottom of the league table in the competition. Their last two matches have seen 3+ goals, with Ajax winning both of these games. Feyenoord also played during the week in the Europa League, losing a thriller against FCSB (4-3). This could be a very important factor in deciding the outcome of this match, as Ajax have had an extra day of rest before welcoming their rivals.
Sem Steijn: The Creative Dynamo Fuelling Twente’s Stellart Start
Feyenoord’s form has been confusing at times this season, but they do have a strong record on the road in the Eredivisie, with five wins from their seven away matches. They’ve scored 20 goals across these matches (2.85 per game), which is the second highest tally on the road in the Eredivisie, behind PSV (24).
I expect a pretty end-to-end contest here with neither side showing particularly strong form across recent matches. The most recent meeting between these sides saw Ajax run out 2-1 winners, and I could see a similar result here, but would lean more towards goals markets, rather than the win markets.
Predictions
BTTS @ 1.5
Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.6
Shot Stats: Oscar Gloukh worth watching
I’ve been following Oscar Gloukh since his emergence on the European stage with RB Salzburg. He looked like a really promising talent then, and is now maturing into a crucial player for Ajax. Gloukh scored twice in Ajax’s win over Qarabag in the Champions League during the week, picking up man of the match for his performance:
Gloukh v Qarabag:
2 goals (1st)
5 shots (1st)
4 chances created (1st)
2 dribbles (1st)
Such a dominant performance will fill him with confidence ahead of this clash for Ajax, and he’s also been performing admirably in the Eredivisie this season. Gloukh has registered eight goal contributions across his nine starts in the Eredivisie this term (4 goals, 4 assists). Only Mika Godts (11) has registered more goal contributions for Ajax in the Eredivisie this term.
Gloukh’s underlying numbers are also very strong, with the 21-year-old having 28 shots across his 15 appearances in the Eredivisie this season (2.70 per 90), as well as creating 17 chances (1.64 per 90). I think Gloukh can still reach another level of performance despite these promising numbers, and that brace in the Champions League should give him the confidence he needs to make an impact here.
Predictions –
Oscar Gloukh to score/assist @ 2.50
Oscar Gloukh 3+ shots @ 2.1
Oscar Gloukh 1+ shots on target @ 1.6
Card Stats: Ajax are quick to frustration
Ajax have had a lot of issues this season, both domestically and in Europe, with their card totals in the Eredivisie reflecting their frustration. Ajax have picked up 28 yellow cards across their 15 matches in the Eredivisie this term (1.86 per 90), which is a record that ranks them fourth in the Dutch top flight for cautions.
Quinten Timber: The Dutch Midfielder Who’s Escaping His Brother’s Shadow
Feyenoord are less aggressive, with a foul average of just 9.20 per game (17th in Eredivise) which suggests that Ajax are the team to target for fouls and cautions here. These derby matches usually bring out an extra layer of aggression from both sides, which will play to our advantage when backing Ajax to be as aggressive as they have been throughout the campaign.
The most recent meeting between the sides saw five match cards, with Ajax picking up three of these cautions as the home side. Ajax also committed 13 fouls in that game, while Feyenoord were less engaging with the opposition and only committed seven fouls.
Predictions –
Ajax 2+ cards @ 1.44
Ajax to be shown the most cards @ 2.3
