Bayern Munich can take a massive step towards securing the Bundesliga title in Vincent Kompany’s first season when they host Mainz on Saturday afternoon. It’s been a decent season from the Bundesliga giants but the fan pressure naturally demands more dominance, especially in the Champions League where they were quite underwhelming. They will face fierce competition from a Mainz side that have plenty to battle for themselves as they seek to qualify for Europe for the first time in their modern history.
Match Stats: Both sides likely to land blows
Mainz ran out 2-1 winners in the initial meeting between the sides making them one of only two sides to get the better of Vincent Kompany’s side this season. This highlights just how far Mainz have come this season, they finished just two points above the drop zone last campaign and now find themselves in a promising position to qualify for Europe, if they can recover their form which has just started to wane recently.
Despite their issues in Europe, the Bundesliga has proven far too easy for Vincent Kompany’s men, particularly in their games at the Allianz Arena. They’ve won 12 of their 15 games at home this season, scoring 48 goals in the process. This scoring power is quite impressive, even in a league where they are usually dominant. It also means that Bayern aren’t as focused on the defensive side of the game with the ability they have to simply outscore their opponents.
Mainz’s recent form may look off putting seeing as they’ve failed to win any of their last five games but have already shown that they can get the better of Bayern this season and importantly, have scored in four of their last five games whilst Bayern have only kept one clean sheet across their last five outings which came against a Heidenheim side battling at the foot of the Bundesliga table.
Predictions:
- BTTS @ 1.65
- Mainz to score @ 1.57
Shot Stats: Olise and Burkardt the standouts
Olise has had an excellent first season at Bayern, slotting seamlessly into an elite side where other players may have needed more time to adapt to this unique setting. He’s provided 19 goal contributions in the Bundesliga this season (8 goals, 11 assists) whilst averaging 3.26 shots per 90 and 1.40 shots on target per 90. Bayern can be relentless in the final third with the attacking quality at their disposal, they’re averaging 8.1 shots on target per game in the Bundesliga this season – more than any other side in the division.
Burkardt has quietly been one of the most effective strikers in Europe this season, scoring 15 goals across his 25 Bundesliga appearances. Only Kane, Schick and Guirassy have outscored the 24 year old in the German top flight this season but Burkardt’s tally is arguably more impressive when considering the level of service he’s getting compared to the other strikers at the top of the scoring charts. Burkardt is Mainz’s top scorer this season and is averaging 2.85 shots per 90 and 1.22 shots on target per 90 in the German top flight this term.

Predictions –
- Olise 1+ shots on target @ 1.25
- Olise to score/assist @ 1.62
Card Stats: Mainz could fall to frustration
One of the areas which has brought Mainz so much success in the Bundesliga this season is their willingness to engage in the slightly uglier parts of the game and this has shown in their card and foul numbers this season.
Mainz rank sixth in the Bundesliga for yellow cards (61) and fourth for fouls committed per game (12.0) which suggests that they are quite aggressive in their challenges and look to quell the flow of the game, especially against top opposition where they are naturally outgunned for quality. This was more than evident in their 2-1 win over Bayern earlier in the season, they committed 21 fouls and were shown three yellow cards.
Their intent at the Allianz Arena is clear, to disrupt the flow of Bayern as much as possible to ensure that they are not out of the game before they can even get a foothold in it. They will be encouraged by their win over Bayern in the initial meeting between the sides, especially as they are only one of two teams to defeat Vincent Kompany’s side in the Bundesliga this season, they should employ a similar approach which should see their foul and card count rise.
Predictions –
- Mainz 2+ cards @ 1.30
- Mainz to be shown the most cards @ 1.73
