Charlotte welcome Toronto as they look to maintain their recent momentum which has seen them win each of their last three matches. This recent run has propelled Charlotte into the playoff spots for now, but they face a battle to keep that spot with a few sides still hunting down a playoff position.

Toronto have struggled to keep up with the quality of the Eastern Conference and have only managed to win five of their 23 games in the MLS this season. Toronto’s away record is particularly poor, with three wins from their 10 away trips this term.

Match Stats: Charlotte to dominate

Charlotte have been in strong form recently, boosting their chances of making the Championship playoffs. They have won their last three matches, including two victories at home. Their home record this season is particularly impressive, with eight wins in 11 games and only two losses. A key factor in their success has been their defensive solidity, only Nashville and New York City have conceded fewer goals at home than Charlotte.

On the other hand, Toronto has had difficulties in away matches. Under Robin Fraser, they have only managed three wins in 10 games on the road this season. Their attacking output away from home has also been limited, with just 15 goals scored. This lack of firepower is unlikely to challenge Charlotte’s well organised defence, especially given the confidence from their recent good run.

The last meeting between these teams was in early June, when Charlotte secured a comfortable 2-0 win. Considering their strong home record and current form, their advantage should be even more pronounced this time. Toronto have only won one of the last five encounters between these sides, too.

Predictions –

  • Charlotte to win @ 1.57
  • Charlotte to score in the first half @ 1.50
  • Charlotte to score in both halves @ 2.10

Shot Stats: Wilfred Zaha the standout

Wilfred Zaha has been a solid contributor for Charlotte since he made the switch from Lyon. The former Crystal Palace man has registered 10 goal contributions across his 21 appearances for Charlotte, a record which includes claiming a goal and an assist in Charlotte’s 3-2 win over Atlanta last time out, to stretch their winning run to three games.

Zaha has had 40 shots across his 21 appearances in the MLS for Charlotte (1.96 per 90), with an impressive 21 of these attempts finding the target (1.03 per 90). So while Zaha’s shot volume isn’t the highest, he tends to be pretty accurate when he does take aim.

He was dangerous in Charlotte’s 2-0 win over Toronto in the last meeting between the sides, he had three shots on target and created more chances than any other player (4), as well as completing the most dribbles (6) and winning four fouls.

Predictions –

  • Wilfred Zaha to score/assist @ 1.67
  • Wilfred Zaha 2+ shots on target @ 2.0

Card Stats: Toronto the more likely to become frustrated

Neither of these sides rank highly in the MLS when it comes to cards, but Toronto may be on the wrong side of the referee more often than Charlotte here. Toronto committed 12 fouls and were shown four yellow cards in the recent head-to-head clash, while Charlotte committed nine fouls and received just the one caution.

Toronto will be without the ball and under pressure for large periods of this game, which could lead to some players becoming agitated and frustrated. There’s good value in taking Toronto to rack up the most cards.

Predictions –

  • Toronto to be shown the most cards @ 1.67
