Gladbach welcome newly promoted Hamburger to Borussia Park on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season. The away side have been absent from the Bundesliga since the 2016/17 season, having been a consistent side in the 10 years before that in the Bundesliga, so it is a big return for the previously established top flight side.
Match Stats: Gladbach are favourites, but Hamburg can cause problems
Gladbach are priced at 1.8 to take all three points here, but I think there is more value in backing Hamburger to make this quite an awkward task for a side that finished mid-table in the Bundesliga last season.
The newly promoted side only lost five of their away games last season, scoring 34 goals across these 17 trips (2.0 per game). This is a scoring power that Hamburger should be able to maintain this season, seeing as they were the second most prolific side on the road in the second division last term, only Magdeburg scored more goals away from home.
Gladbach scored 29 goals across their 17 home games last season (1.70 per game), but only managed to win seven of these matches, mainly due to the 26 goals they conceded across these fixtures (1.52 per 90). Only three of their home games ended in draws last season which is a total that indicates that their home matches tend to be end to end and have plenty of chances for both sides.
Predictions
- Hamburger to score @ 1.29
- BTTS @ 1.45
- Over 2.5 goals @ 1.45
Shot Stats: Injuries and transfers disrupt the Gladbach frontline
Gladbach are likely to be without their top scorer from last season in Tim Kleindiest for this clash, he is expected to be sidelined with an injury. Alessane Plea was their second top scorer in the top flight last season, but he has departed to PSV, leaving Gladbach in a tough situation. Kleindiest and Plea were the only two players to hit double digits for goals in the Bundesliga for Gladbach last term, the next top scorer after this duo was Franck Honorat, with only four goals.
That being said, Gladbach have managed to score 2+ goals in all five of their friendly matches in preparation for the season, so they still carry a goal threat, but it’s not exactly clear who will provide it which makes me pivot more to the goalscoring options that Hamburger have within their ranks.
They have also lost their top scorer from last season in Davie Selke who netted 22 goals in the Bundesliga 2 last season. They have kept hold of Ransford Konigsdorffer and Robert Glatzel who both reached double digits for goals last season and could make the step up to the Bundesliga. Konigsdorffer is the player that stands out to me from the Hamburger options as a possible goalscorer here, or at the very least to carry an attacking threat.
Predictions
- Ransford Konigsdorffer to score anytime @ 3.1
- Ransford Konigsdorffer 3+ shots @ 2.00
- Ransford Konigsdorffer 1+ shots on target @ 1.57
Card Stats: Look to the away side for cautions
Gladbach only received 49 yellow cards last season (1.44 per game), only Bayern Munich (48) and St Pauli (47) received fewer cards than Gladbach in the Bundesliga last season.
This tally suggests that Gladbach are not that much of a high energy side and tend to shy away from a high number of duels and tackles. However, newly promoted sides tend to rank high in the card count. Hamburger received 77 yellow cards and five red cards across their 34 games in the Bundesliga 2 last season (2.41 per game).
Predictions
- Hamburger to be shown the most cards @ 1.72
- Hamburger 2+ cards @ 1.30
