Monaco welcome Lyon, with the home side looking to find a way back into the race for Europe, having slipped down to ninth after their loss to Marseille in their last game in Ligue 1, back on the 14th December. Lyon found some form before the winter break and come into this game having won their last three matches across all competitions. Lyon currently sit four points ahead of Monaco and can solidify their own bid for a spot in Europe with victory here.

Match Stats: Lyon can cause problems

Monaco have won five of their eight home matches in Ligue 1 this season, but these wins haven’t been totally convincing, with Monaco conceding 12 goals across these matches. They tend to give up opportunities to their opponents.

With this in mind, backing Lyon in a few markets seems like a sensible play – with the away side coming into this game with more confidence than Monaco, who find themselves needing a win here to put themselves back in the race for Europe. A loss here would put Monaco seven points behind Lyon.

Lyon are priced at 3.75 to win here, which is an appealing price in itself, but I’d lean more towards goals and Lyon double chance, as Lyon’s away games tend to be quite closely contested. Lyon have avoided defeat in five of their eight away matches in Ligue 1 this term, and carry more momentum into this fixture than Monaco.

Predictions –

Lyon to score @ 1.30

Lyon Double Chance @ 1.83

Lyon 2+ goals scored @ 2.50

Shot Stats: Afonso Moreira worth keeping an eye on

Afonso Moreira usually lines up on the left wing for Lyon and has enjoyed a strong season so far, with six goal contributions across just five starts in Ligue 1. He’s recorded a goal contribution in each of his last three matches for Lyon, with these spanning across three different competitions.

Afonso has also pitched in with two goals in the Europa League this season, despite only getting 170 minutes of action in the competition. These are small sample sizes, but clearly show that Afonso has real talent and can extend his strong run of form in this clash.

He has taken 15 shots across his five starts in Ligue 1 this campaign (2.42 per 90), seeing five of these shots find the target (0.81 per 90). Afonso has been key for Lyon across recent matches.

Predictions –

Afonso Moreira to score or assist @ 2.60

Afonso Moreira 2+ shots @ 1.66

Card Stats: Aggressive tendencies in both camps

Monaco have picked up more cards than any other side in Ligue 1 so far this season, with their tally of 38 (2.3 per game) being pretty reflective of the frustration that has followed the club. Monaco have picked up 2+ cards in 10 of their 16 games in Ligue 1 this term, and picked up two cards in the most recent head-to-head clash between the sides back in May.

Lyon have picked up eight fewer cards than Monaco in Ligue 1 this season, but rank first in the division for fouls committed (14.6 per game). Lyon have committed 10+ fouls in 15 of their 16 matches in Ligue 1 this term, with 12 of these games seeing Lyon commit at least 13 fouls.

Predictions –

Monaco 2+ cards @ 1.30

Monaco 3+ cards @ 2.10

Lyon 13+ fouls committed @ 1.8

Lyon 14+ fouls committed @ 2.25
