Monchengladbach welcome Frankfurt as they hunt for their first win of the Bundesliga season, having drawn two and lost two of their league matches so far. They are yet to score a goal at home this season, having also conceded four goals across their two home matches.
Frankfurt have made a slightly brighter start to the season, but still have stumbled in games against Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen, leaving their record at two wins and two defeats from the opening series of matches.
Match Stats: Frankfurt Favourites
Monchengladbach fell to a 4-0 defeat against Werder Bremen in their most recent home game in the Bundesliga. They did have chances in the game, with 19 shots and an xG of 1.48, but allowed their opponents access to their box far too easily, with Werder Bremen recording an xG of 2.09 from just 12 shots.
These underlying numbers would suggest that 4-0 was a harsh scoreline, but Monchengladbach didn’t do enough to win the game and perhaps needed the dramatic wake up call, having not won a Bundesliga match this season.
Similarly to other teams like Aston Villa and D.C. United, Monchengladbach’s biggest issue at the moment is converting chances. They are creating them with frequency, but they’ve only scored one goal across their opening four matches – which came against Bayer Leverkusen last time out, it took them until the 92nd minute to score.
This scoring power pales in comparison to Frankfurt’s, who scored three goals alone last time out against Union Berlin, in a game that they ended up losing 4-3.
Frankfurt shouldn’t have an issue when it comes to being outscored here, they’ve netted 11 goals across their opening four matches of the season (2.75 per game) and even though they’ve conceded nine goals across these games, Monchengladbach don’t look like a side that is currently in a position to take advantage of the issues that Frankfurt have been facing at the back.
These sides faced off on three occasions last season, twice in the league and once in the cup. Frankfurt avoided defeat in all three games, winning two of the clashes by 2-0 and 2-1 scorelines.
Predictions
Frankfurt to win @ 2.15
BTTS and Frankfurt to win @ 2.96
Frankfurt 2+ goals scored @ 1.8
Shot Stats: Can Uzun is a Future Star
Can Uzun has been one of the most impressive players in the Bundesliga so far this season, with six goal contributions across his four appearances in the German top flight.
The 19 year old featured sparingly for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga last season, starting just six matches. He did manage to show his quality in these games with five goal contributions across just 669 minutes of football in the Bundesliga – that’s a goal or an assist every 133 minutes, which is an exceptional record for a teenager.
He’s had 12 shots across his four appearances (3.48 per 90), with six of these efforts finding the target (1.74 per 90). Uzun leads the Frankfurt ranks when it comes to goal contributions so far this season, and I’d back him to continue his excellent run of form in this game.
Another notable aspect of Uzun’s game is how often he is on the ball. He’s had 227 touches across his four games in the Bundesliga (65.9 per 90), so he’s more involved than most other players. 17 of these touches were in the opposition box (4.94 per 90), which is another promising record when backing him for a goal contribution here.
Predictions
Can Uzun to Score/Assist
Can Uzun 3+ shots
Can Uzun 1+ shots on target
Card Stats: Expect Gladbach to grow frustrated
Gladbach have received nine yellow cards across their four Bundesliga games this season (2.25 per game).
I think that their frustration will arise from failing to be a competitive force in the game. They’ve lost two and drawn two of their Bundesliga matches so far and only scored one goal across these games, they’ve failed to score in front of their home crowd in their opening two home matches of the season.
Frankfurt can punish this lack of decisiveness in front of goal with the scoring power they’ve produced at the start of the season (11 goals across four matches). This should result in Gladbach catching the eye of the referee more frequently than their opponents, given the frustrations they’ve been facing at the start of the season.
