Assane Diao: The Heir to Joaquín’s Throne?

From Fabián Ruiz to Dani Ceballos, Real Betis’ academy has long been a production line of exciting talent, and its latest gem, Assane Diao, is beginning to turn heads in Andalusia. The 19-year-old forward, known for his electric pace and intelligent movement, has become one of the most promising players to emerge from the academy in recent years. With his performances already drawing comparisons to Betis legend Joaquín, Diao is seen as a future star for club and country.

Diao was born in Senegal but moved to Spain at the age of three. A youth product of Badajoz, Flecha Negra, and Balón de Cádiz, he moved to the youth academy of Real Betis in 2021 after impressive performances in regional youth tournaments, on a contract until 2024. Originally a midfielder, his attacking skills led him to be molded into a left winger, and he started playing with the reserves in the Segunda Federación in 2022.

One of the standout features of Diao’s game is his ability to create chances out of nothing. His quick feet and ability to take on defenders make him a constant threat in one-on-one situations. Add to that his improving end product — with goals and assists becoming more regular — and it’s no surprise that many at Betis are excited about his future.

Diao has also shown flashes of leadership and maturity on the field, playing with a confidence that belies his young age. His decision-making continues to improve, and his work ethic and willingness to learn have been praised by head coach Manuel Pellegrini.

Emulating Joaquín: A Path to Greatness

Few players have left a mark on Real Betis like Joaquín Sánchez, the club’s legendary winger and one of the most beloved figures in Spanish football. Joaquín made his debut for Betis in 2000 and quickly became known for his incredible dribbling, vision, and flair, eventually representing Spain at two World Cups and becoming one of La Liga’s most consistent performers over two decades.

For the young Diao, the task of emulating Joaquín is monumental, but the roadmap is clear. Joaquín’s career was built on more than just skill — it was his dedication, football intelligence, and connection to the Betis faithful that made him iconic. Diao, like other upcoming Betis youngsters, would have looked to Joaquín as the golden standard, and now he has a unique opportunity to learn from the veteran, who remains with the club as an ambassador and mentor to young players.

What Does Diao Need to Improve On?

While Diao’s raw talent is undeniable, there are still areas of his game that need refining if he is to reach the heights of his predecessor. Joaquín was renowned for his consistency and delivering top-level performances season after season. For Diao, the challenge will be maintaining a high standard week in and week out, now that he has begun featuring regularly at senior level.

While being a gifted dribbler, Diao also could benefit from improving his physicality and composure in front of goal; his first few appearances of the season have been largely ineffective. Joaquín’s longevity was also partly due to his ability to adapt his style of play as he aged, and Diao will need to develop the same tactical flexibility as his career progresses.

The Future for Diao

With Real Betis continually nurturing his talent, Assane Diao has all the tools to make a significant impact at the club. His potential is immense, and if he continues on his current trajectory, he could be the next homegrown star after Joaquin himself.

Fans are already buzzing about his potential, and despite his bumpy start to the new season, many believe that Spanish youth international could be the heir to Joaquín’s legacy.
