Match Stats: Switzerland Can Frustrate

I’ve not been too impressed by Argentina so far. They’ve found a way to get through, mainly because of Messi, but it’s clear that they aren’t quite operating at the same efficient level which carried them to the trophy back in 2022.

Argentina avoided scares against both Cape Verde and Egypt to reach the quarter-finals and haven’t looked that convincing aside from when they can get the ball to Messi. I can see Switzerland causing them problems at times, they’re very organised and have that bit of extra attacking quality in the final third to punish Argentina in a way that Cape Verde and Egypt were unable to.

Shots Stats: Dan Ndoye a Consistent Threat

Switzerland’s wide players stand out to me here for shots and shots on target. It’s usually Dan Ndoye and Ruben Vargas that flank Breel Embolo, but Fabian Rieder did come into the starting XI for Switzerland’s clash against Colombia in the Round of 16.

I think Ndoye can be a real threat from the left wing, Argentina have conceded 2+ goals in each of their two knockout matches against Cape Verde and Egypt - looking particularly vulnerable in transition, which is where Ndoye and Switzerland will excel.

Ndoye has taken 13 shots at the World Cup (3.63 per 90), seeing six of those efforts find the target (1.68 per 90). He can be inconsistent at times with his efforts, but the Nottingham Forest winger is a real danger to this Argentina backline, who do look a bit disorganised at the moment.

Cards Stats: Time to Back Unders?

I’ve been quite consistent with going against cards at this World Cup. The referees have shown that they are going to be extremely lenient, aside from a few rare instances, so it’s worth looking at the unders lines for cards in this one.

Argentina have benefitted more than most teams when it comes to avoiding cautions. Lionel Scaloni’s side have only collected three yellow cards, despite committing 59 fouls across their five matches (11.8 per game). 

This works out to a card every 19 fouls for Argentina, which is far more generous of a record than most sides have been afforded at the World Cup so far. For comparison, England are collecting a caution for every seven fouls they commit - a pretty big swing.
