Match Stats: Intense and Entertaining Game Expected

The Devon Derby is one of the fiercest rivalries in football, and this meeting should be no different, despite it taking place in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Both sides competed in League One last season, so we have some recent data about their matches - but Exeter did drop down to League Two after a disappointing campaign in which they never really managed to create any momentum in the second half of the campaign.

The most recent head-to-head meeting between these sides ended in a 2-2 draw. That game saw six yellow cards from 24 match fouls, the majority of which were committed by Exeter as the away side.

The initial league meeting between the sides last season saw 32 match fouls and five yellow cards produced, with Exeter coming away as 2-0 winners. I think we can expect a decent number of goals again in this cup tie as both sides are likely to rotate a little, but still take the occasion seriously.

Predictions -

Both Teams to Score @ 1.66
Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.53
Exeter to Score @ 1.50

Shot Stats: Nice Price on Cole

One of the more notable aspects of the meeting between these sides last season was the performance of Reece Cole - who scored in both meetings.

One of his goals came from outside the box, and he emerged as Exeter’s second top scorer in League One last season, behind Jayden Wareham, who netted 19 goals in an impressive personal campaign.

I’m drawn to the price of Reece Cole to get on the scoresheet. At the time of writing, there are limited markets for shots and shots on target, but the 6.50 on offer for him to score against Plymouth again is worth a small play.

Predictions -

Reece Cole to Score Anytime @ 6.50

Card Stats: Expect the Referee to let a lot go

These derby matches are often approached with a lot of caution by referees, as they will understand the pressures on both sides and the scale of the occasion.

Cup matches usually produce fewer cards than league fixtures too, so I wouldn’t go chasing high lines as the value isn’t there and it could be quite a few fouls before we start to see yellow cards produced.

The initial league meeting between these sides last season is a good example: 32 match fouls produced just five yellow cards - again, we haven’t got many foul markets available at the time of writing so I think it’s best to pick out a few individuals for cautions.

Jayden Wareham is a nice price to pick up a card. I always like backing forwards that will play at the pinnacle of a low block for fouls and a card, as they often have to do a lot of chasing and are outnumbered when trying to act as an outlet for their side.

Wareham did this often for Exeter last season, picking up more yellow cards than any other player (8).

Predictions -

Jayden Wareham to be Shown a Card @ 4.0
