Xavi Espart: A Journey of Class, Ambition and Perseverance
Why is Xavi Espart, the new La Masia gem, being compared to Philipp Lahm?
It was a bright Sunday afternoon; Barcelona were playing against Levante. During the fifth minute of the match, a strange thing happened. A nineteen-year-old left-back received the ball and passed it to Pau Cubarsi. Then, instead of occupying the wide lane, he shifted into the half-space and made an in-behind run through on goal. In the meantime, via Cubarsí and Rodri, the ball came to Raphinha. He played one-touch with Fermín and gave a small pass to the fellow left-back. He received the ball just before the D-box and took a smooth touch to edge past the defender, which opened up the space for him; then, he placed the ball into the bottom-left corner to score his first goal for the senior Barcelona team. The name of the left-back is Xavi Espart, the new La Masia gem, who has already played 440 minutes of top-flight football this season. He is the sixth most used outfield player by Hansi Flick. Espart is now one of the most talked-about youngsters in Europe, however, his journey is a testament to grit, ambition, humility, and perseverance.
The Beginning
Espart joined La Masia in 2015, at the age of eight. He lived in Vilassar de Mar, a small town just a few minutes away from the Camp Nou. So, the influence was there since childhood. When every kid wanted to become a scorer and gain the spotlight, Espart was more interested in build-up and understanding the game. Growing up, he was part of the same youth teams as Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Marc Bernal. Espart started his journey at La Masia playing at number 6. But as competition increased in the midfield, his Cadete coach Ivan Carrasco did some experiments and shifted him into the right-back position.
Since then, throughout his youth career, Espart alternated between the two positions. The first shift was challenging for him. It was not easy for a midfielder to operate in the wide region; however, after a few matches, he adopted it seamlessly. His understanding of positioning and space helped him a lot in this evolution. He started to function as a full-back with the brain of a number 6 and became a tactical asset for every coach.
The Mentality and Resilience
Although Espart belonged to the same batch of La Masia, he was never able to become a talking point quite like his teammates. He was not as flamboyant as Lamine Yamal, as talented as Pau Cubarsí or as technically gifted as Marc Bernal. However, he was always on top in discipline and work ethic.
Yamal made his senior team debut at 15, in April 2023. Cubarsí sealed his spot in January 2024, followed by Bernal in August. Espart had seen all of this. He saw his batchmates having their debuts and creating headlines. But he never complained or chose to leave to get minutes like other La Masia graduates Dro Fernández and Marc Guiu. Instead, he opted for a different path. As a Catalan kid, his dream was to play for FC Barcelona; therefore, he congratulated his mates, turned the focus to his own work and started to wait patiently for the right moment.
He has gone through every stage of La Masia—Infantil, Cadete, Juvenil A and captained the Barça Atlètic team on their way to UEFA Youth League triumph. In this digital age, when young footballers are getting hungry for attention and popularity, Espart espouses a separate identity. He went for maturity over sensation, clarity over recognition, which reflect the true signs of his personality.
The Breakthrough
Espart made his Barcelona debut on 10 March 2026, off the bench against Newcastle in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg. He came on in the 88th minute for Ronald Araujo as a right-back and left a brilliant impression despite playing only nine minutes. He produced two important defensive contributions and one genuine goal-saving clearance.
Coaches prefer a secure environment to provide young talent their debuts. Yamal made his debut against Real Betis, in the 83rd minute, when Barcelona were 4-0 up at the Camp Nou. Cubarsi got his debut against Unionistas de Salamanca in a round-of-16 Copa del Rey clash. In both cases, the stakes were low and the opponent was being dominated. However, Hansi Flick put Espart on the field in a Champions League knockout match against a rejuvenated Newcastle side, that too away from home when Barcelona were losing the match 0-1.
Any small mistake could have ruined his reputation in the squad. But Espart is built differently. He took the opportunity with pride, did not put a single foot wrong during those nine minutes and provided a brilliant performance. He was calm, composed and incredibly comfortable with the ball, which instantly drew the attention of Flick. Barcelona left the pitch with a 1-1 scoreline.
The Emergence of the Gem
With that performance in the Newcastle game, Espart put himself on Flick’s list of his most admired players. Since then, he started seven games last season. Although in most of the games he started as a right-back, Flick was pretty aware of his versatility and was immensely impressed with his attitude.
This season, Espart began his preparation where he left off. As the greatest show on earth was around the corner, Espart knew that many first-team players would join the team late for their World Cup duties. So he took the preseason very seriously and convinced Flick that he is ready for the ultimate task.
The hard work finally paid off. He has already played 5 matches this season with a 7.91 average Fotmob rating. Till now, in La Liga, he has produced 1 goal and 2 assists, playing 440 minutes of football. Although he was playing mostly as a right-back last season, this season Flick shifted him to the left-back position.
Despite playing in an unusual position, he looked flawless. He is not only contributing defensively but also solving problems in attacking movements, which very few players are able to do in the world at this moment. That is the reason he established himself as the main left-back option for Flick while having serious competition from natural talents like Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde.
The Ultimate Problem Solver
But the question is, why is Flick trusting a nineteen-year-old prodigy over the experienced full-backs? Because the way Espart is solving the tactical problems on the pitch is a privilege for every elite coach who wants to dominate possession and suffocate the opponents with continuous counter-pressing.
Balde offers relentless pace and overlaps, Cancelo brings more chaos and dominance in one-on-one situations with his immaculate dribbling skills. But Espart operates with a totally different approach. He is a full-back with the brain of a number 6. His understanding of space and timing is nothing short of extraordinary.
Instead of the right, this season Flick is using him as a left-back. This lays out a completely new tactical superiority for Barcelona. Espart is right-footed, and playing on the left opens up more critical angles for him to provide line-breaking passes. He just knows when to pass and when to hold back. From playing so many years in the midfield, he also possesses immaculate ball-playing abilities.
During a Barcelona attack, if Espart decides to go inside and play one-touch football with Pedri and Rodri to move the ball forward, he works as an extra midfielder and produces a numerical advantage. If his counterpart steps up to press him in the midfield, he opens up a ton of space for Gordon and Adeyemi to exploit with their blistering speed. And if he decides to stay wide and utilise the space, he gives a huge amount of time to an elite passer like Espart to pick the perfect pass for his teammates. In both cases, it will have a devastating impact on the defence.
Barcelona is able to implement this structure so seamlessly only because of Espart’s impeccable understanding of the game and decision-making abilities. Also, years of chemistry with Yamal, Cubarsi, and Bernal play a huge part. Even before touching the ball, they know where the ball is going to arrive.
The Leader of the Future
Maybe he is not the one with the best talent or gifted elegance. However, the one thing that separates him from everyone is his attitude towards life and football. He played in multiple positions, struggled, but in the end, adapted and made himself comfortable with the change. In a recent interview, Hansi Flick compared his footballing intelligence and ability with Philipp Lahm. This praise holds huge weight because Flick is a person who does not praise easily and he has worked with Lahm so closely in Germany and Bayern Munich; so coming from him, it is in itself an achievement. Espart's entire family are die-hard Barcelona fans and they are overwhelmed with the sudden fame and the love and affection he is getting. He has captained Barça Atlètic on the road to becoming UEFA Youth League champions; many insiders are already starting to see him as a future captain to lead this of Barcelona’s second golden generation.
