Chelsea Are Building for the Future. So Why Jordan Henderson?

Jordan Henderson is a Chelsea player. It's a sentence that would have sounded almost impossible a few years ago. The former Liverpool captain has agreed to join Chelsea following his departure from Brentford, with the 36 year old set to sign a two year contract at Stamford Bridge. It's another clear sign that Chelsea's recruitment strategy is evolving under Xabi Alonso.

For years, Chelsea have relentlessly pursued youth. Potential, longevity and resale value have been the pillars of the club's transfer strategy. Henderson represents almost the opposite. He is a 36 year old midfielder with more than 500 appearances in English football, over 80 England caps, and a trophy cabinet containing almost everything there is to win at club level.

Judging his arrival purely on age, or on what he can still offer technically, misses the point. Chelsea haven't signed Henderson because they desperately needed another midfielder. They've signed him because they needed a leader. If there's any doubt about his ability to provide that, the players who've shared a dressing room with him leave little room for argument.
