Wardrobe Malfunctions and Incidents That Remain Football-Famous to This Day

Most football games go off without a hitch, despite not always yielding the results you want. However, that’s certainly not true of every game. Some will make you put your head in your hands, cry out in horror, or yell in excitement.
From ripping off a glove out of frustration and saving a goal, to playing a game with no shirt on, here are some of the most well-known wardrobe malfunctions and incidents in football history that remain noteworthy to this day:
Ricardo Pereira, the Bare-Handed Hero
Most goalkeepers wear gloves to improve their grip on the ball and protect their hands from impact. They feature special tacky palms to help them catch fast-moving balls that they may otherwise miss.
However, if you were a Portugal fan in the early 2000s, you may recall a specific high-stakes quarterfinal involving Ricardo Pereira. During a penalty shootout against England, Ricardo became frustrated with his gloves and intentionally ripped them off right before Darius Vassell’s kick. Despite the risk, he still managed to save the shot bare-handed before taking the next penalty himself (still without gloves) and winning the match for Portugal.
Diego Forlán, the Bare-Chested Player
If you’ve ever wondered how IFAB/FIFA’s yellow card rule for removing shirts came into play, you basically have Diego Forlán to thank.
When playing for Manchester United against Southampton in late 2002, Diego ripped off his jersey and waved it above his head in excitement after a goal. Because of the dual-layer design of Nike’s uniform, the wet shirt was too difficult to pull back over his head.
The game restarted before he fixed his wardrobe issue, so Diego had to play bare-chested while holding his shirt. He even tried a defensive tackle half-naked before a staff member helped him put it back on. In 2004, a new rule took effect: you weren’t allowed to remove a jersey during celebrations.
Piero Hincapié, the Shorts Slipper
In what is one of the most bizarre wardrobe malfunctions of 2026, Piero Hincapié made headline news for all the strangest reasons after exposing his butt to the world. When Arsenal faced Burnley at Emirates Stadium in London in May 2026, Piero tried to get the ball from Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe. The pair collided, and Piero fell to the ground.
When he sat up, his shorts were below his butt. He lay down to pull them up, which exposed him even more. After rewatching footage of the bizarre event, they discovered that the force of his fall caused his pants to fall down.
Emilio Rentería, the No-Number Player
During a CONCACAF Champions League match against Santos Laguna in 2010, Columbus Crew’s Emilio Rentería was forced off the field to get his head stitched and bandaged after he was elbowed in the head. He also had to change his jersey. However, the jersey that he changed into didn’t have a number. When he scored a goal, the referee disregarded it because he hadn’t re-entered play with authorization.
All football games have a bit of action, but some games are certainly more controversial and headline-inducing than others. The next time you watch a football game, you can’t help but wonder whether a player will rip a shirt, lose a glove, or expose bare skin.
