Maxim De Cuyper- Brighton's output demon
Maxim De Cuyper has really come into his own this season, following the injuries of key Brighton wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh, alongside the absence of new signing Femi Azeez.
The Belgian signed for the Albion in the summer of 2025, originally to be the team's starting fullback. But after his defensive frailties were exposed in the Premier League, Fabian Hurzeler decided to give him roles which held less defensive responsibility, often holding width on the left hand side.
Eventually, De Cuyper was tried out at left wing. A 'downgrade' from Minteh, and Mitoma? Not at all. Could, even be argued as an upgrade if we are talking output levels, and efficiency.
And Maxim hasn't looked back. Since his first games out wide, he has been a threat to opposition constantly, with his movement, crossing ability and ball striking. De Cuyper isn't a typical winger, doesn't hold explosive pace or isn't a particularly strong dribbler.
But what the Belgian international does have is a very good understanding of wide play. When to pass, how to weight them, where to cross or find dangerous players to finish.
De Cuyper's positioning is excellent, constantly being in the right place at the right time. His shot placement, as well as power, and on both feet, is something to be particularly highlighted, especially considering he has been a fullback for a large portion of his career.
The former Club Brugge player and academy graduate is very direct with his actions, hence the 7 goals and assists (4 goals, 3 assists) so far this season in all competitions. Efficient, but most of all, decisive!

Will Maxim keep his place following the return of one Kaoru Mitoma?
This is very much up for debate. Whilst Maxim is a superb fit for the style, Mitoma has proven what he can do at the top level on multiple occasions, being one of the league's best in his prime.
Whilst Mitoma has some of these qualities himself, he is more effective at dribbling, entering the opponents final third, taking defenders on 1v1, and engaging opposition defenders who often are instructed to double up on the Japanese international.
It will be a very difficult conversation to have, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. Maxim has time on his side for now, as Mitoma is not due to return for another few weeks at the very least.
De Cuyper has enjoyed a resurgence for Brighton so far this season, arguably being one of the best in his position in the country. After (warranted) criticism last year, what a bargain £17 million is looking to be!
