Alidu Seidu: From the Rough Streets of Kumasi to the French Footballing Elite

But for Alidu Seidu, it’s his unshakeable determination and unwavering commitment to defense that has earned him the reputation as one of the good defenders in the sport.
Born in the rough streets of Kumasi, Ghana, Seidu’s early life was marked by adversity. Growing up in a low-income household with his parents working so hard to make ends meet, Alidu knew what it meant to struggle. But he also knew that he had a gift – his incredible athleticism, sharp instincts, and unyielding work ethic. As a young boy, he began playing street football with his friends, honing his skills and developing a passion for the beautiful game.
His natural talent didn’t go unnoticed for long. He was quickly picked up by a youth team called JMG Academy in Ivory Coast and eventually made his way into the professional ranks with Clermont B and later joined the senior team after a year . From there, he never looked back.
As a defender, the talented defender is known for his tenacious tackling, his ability to read the game with ease, and his uncanny knack for anticipating opposition attacks. He’s like a force field on the pitch – opponents dare not try to breach his defenses.
In his first season with Clermont Foot, Alidu proved himself to be an integral component in Pascal Gastien’s side. And it wasn’t just one season – he repeated this feat year after year, cementing his status as one of the best defenders in the French league.
One of his best games for Clermont was their famous win over PSG when they won by 3-2. The Ghanaian played against the legendary Spanish defender Sergio Ramos in that match and says he felt proud being on the same pitch with a player he idolised while growing up.

“When I was little, I really liked Sergio Ramos. He’s a player who goes into duels, fights, and is always there,” Seidu told Ligue 1. In good times, he’s there, in difficult times, he’s there. He always gives his all. It’s true, he gets a lot of red cards, but he’s a player who never gives up. When I had the chance to play against him in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, it was a dream come true!”
But what sets the Ghanaian apart from other defenders is his leadership. He’s a natural-born captain, always barking out instructions to his teammates and directing traffic on the pitch. He’s the first one to put his body on the line, whether it’s to block a shot or make a last-ditch tackle.
As news of Alidu’s incredible skills spread, clubs from around Europe came calling. He eventually joined Stade Rennais for a fee of €11 million. “Stade Rennais is a great club and it’s a great privilege for me,” said Seidu. “I had a great time at Clermont, they gave me everything and welcomed me like a member of the family. I became a man there, and the adventure continues at Rennes and I’m very happy about that.”
At international level, he has been very brilliant and many footballing fans call him “Alidu the Goat” due to his wonderful performance he showcases anytime he wears the national team colors. For some years now, the Ghana national team’s defense has been a topic of concern for many football fans, but after Alidu made his debut for the national team he has proved to be a solid rock Ghanaians can rely on.
His impressive display earned him high praise from fans and pundits alike, with many hailing him as one of the best defenders in the history of Ghana football and one good thing they like about him is, he can play all the positions at the back. However, despite his impressive resume and numerous accolades, Alidu Seidu remains humble and grounded. He knows that there’s no substitute for hard work and dedication – something he credits for his success.
The talented Ghanaian legacy continues to inspire young players around the world especially those in Ghana. Alidu Seidu is a modern-day great defender who has revolutionized the way center-backs play. His strength, vision, and leadership have made him a vital cog in Stade Rennais.
