Nantes welcome Metz in a crucial early season clash at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table. Metz sit rock bottom of Ligue 1, having won just one of their 10 matches this term, conceding more goals than any other side in the division (26).

Nantes are in a poor position themselves, with two wins from their 10 matches in the French top flight. Nantes have the unwanted record of the worst home record in Ligue 1 this term, winning just one of their five matches.

Match Stats: Stay away from result markets

This is a really unpredictable game with how poor both sides have been so far this season. I’d still expect goals with the 21 goals that Metz have conceded across their five away matches this season, but picking a clear winner looks to be a difficult task, so I’ve pivoted towards the goal markets.

Metz are conceding 4.2 goals per game across their five away matches in Ligue 1 this season. This is far and away the worst defensive away record of any side in the French top flight, which can encourage Nantes. The home side have seen 16 goals across their five matches this term (3.2 per game), with Nantes conceding 10 of these goals – the second most of any side at home in Ligue 1 this term, behind Lorient (12).

Musa Al-Taamari: Ligue 1’s First Jordanian Player

It’s difficult to back Nantes for a win, even when considering how weak Metz’s backline has been on the road, as they have only won one of their five home games in Ligue 1 this term – the worst home record of any side in the division.

Predictions –

Over 1.5 Goals @ 1.3

Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.75

BTTS @ 1.80

Shot Stats: Gauthier Hien the player to watch

Hien has easily been Metz’s best player so far this season, with five goal contributions across his nine appearances in Ligue 1. This record is particularly impressive seeing as Metz have only managed to score eight goals across their 10 Ligue 1 matches, so he is a key player for them.

Hien scored twice in Metz’s first win of the season as they ran out 2-0 winners over Lens. He captains the side and has had 11 shots across his nine appearances in the French top flight (1.35 per 90). There should be scope for this average to rise here with the various issues that Nantes have had at home this season, including conceding the second most goals of any side at home in Ligue 1 this term (10).

Hien was just as influential for Metz last season with 18 goal contributions across his 33 appearances in Ligue 2. He averaged 1.95 shots per 90 across these games and should have plenty of confidence, following his brace against Lens last time out.

Predictions –

Gauthier Hien 1+ shots on target

Gauthier Hien 2+ shots

Gauthier Hien to score/assist

Card Stats: Stats point to a modest card total

Neither of these sides rank highly when it comes to fouls and cards in Ligue 1. Though, I do anticipate a rise in the averages of both sides here, with the clash being crucial in the context of the relegation battle.

Metz have received 11 yellow cards across their 10 matches in Ligue 1 this term (1.1 per game), with Metz averaging 11.7 fouls committed per game across these matches. Metz will see this as one of their few winnable games this season, especially away from home, so this could spark an extra layer of tenacity.

Nantes have picked up 16 cards across their 10 Ligue 1 matches (1.6 per game), so they are slightly more likely to end up in the referees notebook here. Again, this is a game that Nantes will feel they have to win to boost their survival hopes come the end of the season, and this could lead to a few more cards than usual.
