Sunday Adetunji Admits Frustration Over Club Situation

After an impressive campaign at FC Shkupi, Nigerian international Sunday Adetunji looks set for a big move this summer after his contract’s expiry, with the 25-year-old currently a free agent. The former Nigeria U23 forward joined the 2022 North Macedonia champions on August 27, 2021, after a successful campaign at Rivers United in Nigeria’s top-flight league. Adetunji has featured in 62 matches in all competitions since joining the club in 2021 and has scored 33 goals with 13 assists.

The media manager of the Super Eagles B striker, Tobi Adepoju confirmed in Lagos, Nigeria: “Adetunji is not happy at FC Shkupi,” said Adepoju. “The situation is becoming unbearable. The management of the club are disrespecting him and they make the environment unconducive. It’s unfortunate, his sacrifice and passion for the club are not appreciated enough and the club only consider what benefits them without considering the player’s interest and future.

“We have had extensive family discussions and we are scared of his health, his mental health has been over-stressed in the past weeks and he is not in a good condition. He is the only one in the country without his family. The management of the club has told him they don’t care about his career. They don’t care about his emotions, and feeling as a human. FC Shkupi just wants their interest to top his wishes and dream.”

Last season, Adetunji finished atop the league’s scoring charts with 20 goals to lead them to their first league title since their founding in 2012. This season, he registered 10 goals — bettered only by three players — and he also became the first FC Shkupi player to score in each of the three tiers of European competition. At 25, he could be set to follow in the footsteps of Terem Moffi, Gift Orban, and Victor Osimhen and become the latest Nigerian forward to earn a move to a club in one of Europe’s major leagues.
