Another week of qualifying round action is complete, with several moves being made in the UEFA coefficient ranking. With three weeks to go before the league phase draw, about 100 teams are still in contention for those remaining spots. However, coefficient points continue to be on the line, which play a big role in each nation's not-too-distant future.

UEFA Coeffiicents 26/27: Qualifying Week 4

Where do we stand now? Here is a look at the UEFA coefficient battles after week five of qualification.

Battle for 50th: Three Horse Race

The race for 50th is looking like it will conclude before the league phase beings. With just three national associations left looking to avoid the bottom five - several have either confirmed their spots or escaped - we are in for a vital round of action.

Gibraltar, Northern Ireland, and Georgia are now left fighting it out to avoid the dreaded 51st spot. All three of them earned a draw, maintaining the status quo for now. However, the biggest winners of the trio are Gibraltar, who earned an unexpected draw through Lincoln Red Imps. In fact, it was nearly a win. However, avoiding defeat is already welcomed.

Northern Ireland and Georgia are involved in a massive direct duel, with the winner all but securing their place in the top 50. Larne and Iberia 1999 drew at Inver Park last Tuesday, meaning this week's decider in the Georgian capital will play a huge role in deciding who will finish in the top 50. It is almost a given that the winning side will secure four European places for their nation for the 2028/29 season.

Adding further intrigue, should Lincoln Red Imps lose their Europa League tie on Thursday, they will meet the winner of the Larne vs Iberia 1999 tie in the Conference League playoff round. If this scenario plays out as expected, it should decide the race for 50th. So, pay close attention to these two matches throughout the week, given the weight they both have.

Battle for 33rd/38th: Latvia, Finland Continue Charge

It is starting to look like the battle for places in the top 33 and top 38 in the five-year UEFA coefficient ranking will remain the same at season's end. We are seeing few suggestions that this will change, unless the last few weeks of qualifying round action throw out some major surprises.

No countries moved up or down this week, with Ireland and Armenia continuing to hold onto the final top 33. The latter increased their lead over the chasing pack, increasing their chances of remaining there. Kosovo and Bosnia have largely disappointed this term, and despite wins from their remaining clubs, there is much work still to be done.

Latvia and Finland have been the best countries outside of the top 30 this term, and if they can keep this up, perhaps they could really give Armenia (and/or even Ireland) a scare. That is still a tall order though, and will likely require multiple teams in the league phase. Neither are expected to do so, with Latvia still in a scenario where all their teams could be knocked out this month.

Kazakhstan remains 38th, and can be thankful that Moldova and Faroe Islands have failed miserably this summer. Liechtenstein might be the only country with a serious chance of moving into the top 38, they will need Vaduz to overcome their UECL first leg defeat, and then make it through the playoff round. If they do not do so, Kazakhstan will be set to finish to avoid falling lower than 38th.

So, things are looking good for Ireland and Armenia, while Latvia and Finland are doing incredible work. Everyone else have been sluggish, and bar a turn of events, we could reach the league phase and not have much more to talk about in this battle.

Battle for 22nd/29th: Austria, Croatia Keep Up Strong Start

The race for 22nd is continuing to look like the one to watch for this season. It is highly intriguing, given the number of nations in the running.

Austria and Croatia have been among the best nations this season, winning nine matches each. The former have only had one loss so far, which is highly impressive. As for the latter, their three wins this week moved them into the top 22 at the expense of Ukraine.

Speaking of the Ukrainians, they finally claimed their first week of the season through Dynamo Kyiv. They are the key to the Eastern European nation to finish in the top 22 this term, as failure to reach the UECL proper will place a considerable amount of pressure on Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Sweden, Scotland, and Slovenia are among the countries to have failed miserably this campaign. The first two are for in the top 22 for now, but things could go south quite quickly for them. There have been pretty poor attempts from the two so far, and could join Slovenia in losing three teams before the league phase.

Serbia holds a top 29 spot at the moment, but that is only temporary. After all, Russia is set to receive 4.333 points, meaning that in essence, the Serbs are still 30th. Them and Iceland have quite a bit of work to do to catch Slovakia or Bulgaria for top 29.

So, with a large group of countries still in contention for top 22, it truly feels like anything could happen here. Less than 0.500 points split 22nd and 23rd at the moment, with Israel also lurking. It will be intriguing to see how things pan out over the next few weeks.

Battle for 14th: Denmark Cruise

To the top 15 in the ranking now, where Denmark, Norway, and Cyprus compete for a spot in the top 14. Things are looking very good for the Danes so far, completing a perfect week.

That puts a distance of almost 3.000 points between them and Cyprus at the moment, putting immense pressure on the latter to avoid losing another side before the league phase. There is a considerably high chance that Denmark will have at least three teams playing European football beyond August - all four sides qualifying cannot be ruled out either.

Norway had the most difficult week, with Brann losing to direct competitors Apollon Limassol of Cyprus. If the latter do move on, it could become decisive in this battle.

Going into the sixth week of qualifying round play, keep a close eye on what happens in Cyprus between Apollon and Brann. That will help determine a lot in this race.

Battle for Top 10: Türkiye Bounce Back

To the last battle in the five-year coefficient ranking - the race for top 10. Türkiye and Czechia can be pleased with how the week went, while the other two are starting to sweat.

The Turks are looking to lock down a fourth league phase spot, and are edging closer to achieving that. That would put Czechia under siege, seeing it would send Hradec Králové to a do-or-die UECL playoff round tie. If that occurs, quite possibly versus Panathinaikos. It is something both they and Beşiktaş are aiming to avoid.

Speaking of Panathinaikos and Greece, they have failed to impress thus far. Even though they have just one reverse, they have encountered some troubles. PAOK lost in the UEL at home, while Panahtinaikos could only manage a draw in their home clash. If either or both of them were to fall before the league phase, it would decrease Greece's chances of top 10 considerably.

As for Poland, they are not safe yet. Remarkably, there could be a scenario where they have no sides left in Europe beyond this month. It is simply a matter of trying to get as many teams into a league phase as possible - preferably with at least one UEL club. Having less than three sides will just spell disaster for them.

What a week we have in store, as Czechia, Poland, and Greece could all end up losing teams. That makes things worth following. Beşiktaş and Hradec's tie is the biggest of the lot, but follow what Panathinaikos, PAOK, and the Polish teams do.

A Look at Everyone Else

Looking at the remaining countries not involved in a battle in the five-year UEFA coefficient rankings, and the top countries look strong early on.

The other countries in UEFA’s five-year coefficient ranking.
UEFA coefficient ranking: Everyone else

Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, and Switzerland all went unbeaten this week, while France's opener did not go to plan. The Belgians are the only nation (that have had teams in action so far) that are unbeaten at this stage, which is a positive step. They are on the cusp of securing a fourth league phase place as well, making it an excellent week.

Towards the bottom, only Andorra managed to get a win, putting them one step closer to having a group phase representative for the very first time. Albania, Belarus, Lithuania, Estonia, and San Marino all drew blanks, suddenly putting three of them in a situation where they could be eliminated next week. ML Vitebsk and Flora Tallinn could keep Belarus and Estonia in it, but it looks highly unlikely San Marino will see Tre Fiori overcome a 4-1 reverse.
