Match Stats: Wolfsburg on the edge of the drop
Wolfsburg have two games left of the Bundesliga season to avoid the drop, or at least get themselves in a position to survive through the relegation play-off. Their final game of the season is actually on the road against St Pauli, the side that sit directly below them and could unseat Wolfsburg from that play-off spot if they can get a positive result against Wolfsburg on the final day.
Wolfsburg will be eager to avoid that drama, but unfortunately line up against the most dominant side in the Bundesliga this season, with Bayern already wrapping up the title a few seasons ago. Wolfsburg will hope that Bayern’s exit to PSG in the Champions League may have unsettled the group a little, or at least taken a bit out of the side in terms of energy, but they’ll need more than that advantage to get over the line here, seeing as Bayern put eight goals past them when the sides last met.
Over 2.5 goals is incredibly short (1.28), but I may be tempted by Wolfsburg to score 2+ goals, which is available at 2.10. Bayern have conceded 2+ goals in three of their last four matches, including Bundesliga clashes against the likes of Heidenheim and Mainz, who both managed to put three goals past Vincent Kompany’s side in recent weeks.
Predictions –
Wolfsburg to score @ 1.22
Wolfsburg to score 2+ goals @ 2.10
Shots Stats: Wolfsburg on the edge of the drop
I’m looking at team shots for Wolfsburg here. It’s a market I like to go to when a side has their backs against the wall and has no option other than to go for the three points. I think the line for Wolfsburg is pretty generous here, their main issues have been defensively this season, rather than in the final third, with Wolfsburg netting 21 goals across their 16 home matches this season.
I like backing shots because the bet is always alive, a bit like goals, it can land in the final few minutes of the game, and it’s pretty fun to track as the shots tick over. Wolfsburg managed eight shots against Bayern when the sides last met, despite losing 8-1 in that game, showing how this selection can cover Wolfsburg being blown away, as their approach is unlikely to change too much regardless of what Bayern do, as they need three points to keep the relegation battle competitive.
I like Wolfsburg to have 12+ shots at 1.90, but I’d also test higher lines up to 15+ shots for the home side, who have managed 12+ shots in each of their last two Bundesliga matches – drawing both of those games, which is part of the reason why this match has become a must-win for the home side.
Predictions –
Wolfsburg 12+ shots @ 1.90
Wolfsburg 13+ shots @ 2.37
Wolfsburg 14+ shots @ 3.00
Cards Stats: Wolfsburg likely to be the aggressors
It can be hard for a side to be motivated when they don’t have anything to fight for, especially if that side has been eliminated from the Champions League recently. This is where Bayern find themselves, and I don’t think there will be too much frustration or angst from Vincent Kompany’s side here, who already have one of the more modest foul and card counts in the Bundesliga (9.00 fouls per game, 55 yellow cards).
Wolfsburg naturally sit a bit higher up these tables due to the extra frustration that usually accompanies a relegation battle. They’re averaging 11.7 fouls committed per game in the Bundesliga, and have picked up five more cards than Bayern Munich in the German top-flight this term (60), as well as picking up three red cards. Wolfsburg committed six fouls and picked up a card when the sides last met, though that meeting lacked any competitive edge as Bayern came away 8-1 winners.
Predictions –
Wolfsburg 2+ cards @ 1.44
Wolfsburg to be shown the most cards @ 2.10
