Why James Tavernier Deserves At Least One More Season at Rangers

Ten years ago, James Tavernier joined Rangers for a fee of £200,000. It’s certainly been a rollercoaster of a journey with many ups and downs. The right-back is set to have his testimonial this summer which will be more than deserved considering what he’s achieved at the club. The 33-year-old still has another year left on his current deal but with the Light Blues set for an imminent takeover and a new manager in the dugout Tavernier’s future is uncertain.

Of course, age catches up with everyone and the Englishman isn’t the same player he was two or three years ago, but that doesn’t mean he still isn’t an asset because he is. The full-back has played 510 times for the Ibrox club, which is an incredible achievement and very rare in today’s modern game. Tavernier is an unbelievable athlete who takes great pride in looking after himself, hence why he’s always available.

Tavernier has found himself occasionally playing at centre-half this season and he’s performed well in that role. So that could be a new potential position for him to play in next season. The Rangers Hall of Famer has played over 320 games in the last four years. You can’t seriously tell me someone like that isn’t at least worth keeping in your squad next season? I’m not saying that he should start every single game, but he still has plenty to offer at his age.

Tavernier is a Rangers legend who has been the club’s best player over the last ten years. He currently holds the record as Britain’s highest scoring defender with a staggering 139 goals. After everything Tavernier has done for the Govan club, he deserves a better send-off than this one. I hope Tavernier is at Ibrox next season and the best right-back to ever grace Scottish football can pick up some more trophies.
