Can Rangers Cause an Upset at Celtic Park?
Rangers are set to face Celtic at 12:30 tomorrow at Celtic Park in a fixture that they MUST win or else they will effectively hand Celtic their third consecutive Premiership title. The league was in the Light Blues’ hands until they surprisingly dropped points to Ross County and Dundee. The Hoops are coming into this game on fine form having won five of their last six league games and currently three points ahead of their rivals and are also ahead of them on goal difference by five goals.
Despite the Ibrox side being underdogs, former Rangers boss Mark Warburton believes his old side have a strong chance of upsetting the odds. He said on the ScotScore Podcast: “I fancy a shock, I do – people will say ‘oh what else is going to say?’ but I think Rangers coming off the Kilmarnock game and the expectation now and the belief has shifted from the blue side to the green side.
“The Celtic crowd I’m sure will be very expectant, they’re in a good position and know what a win will do, in terms of goal difference and points difference. So suddenly the barometer switches and I think Rangers can take advantage of that.
So certainly, for me, I think Rangers have a very strong chance of going there and upsetting the odds because they’re going into a game having rediscovered their goal-scoring touch after the Dundee 0-0 game and the Ross County defeat and now going into that game, I think they can really surprise Celtic – that’s what I want to happen.”
Rangers have only beaten Celtic twice in their last 11 league fixtures but when it comes to an Old Firm game – form goes out of the window and this group of players will need to ensure they rise to the occasion and keep their title aspirations alive.
