What Does the Future Hold for Motherwell’s Blair Spittal?

Dundee United mark their return to the Scottish Premiership with a derby encounter against Dundee. The two clubs famously play just a stone’s throw away from one another in the City of Discovery, but while they may be neighbours, the rivalry between the teams is an intense one. Sunday’s clash is, therefore, expected to be a heated affair that both teams hope might set a tone for what’s to come for the season ahead.

Match stats: Dundee to escape with at least a point

Dundee look enticing value at 2.9 to get the win over 90 minutes, with little to suggest that they deserve to be underdogs going into this match. After all, the Dark Blues finished deservedly in the top six last season and have made one of the Premiership’s signings of the summer by attracting Simon Murray from Ross County. The striker scored 23 goals in all competitions last term for a team that found itself battling against the drop, and he will expect to come close to those numbers once again this time around. He already has four.

Dundee, meanwhile, came through in the League Cup with flying colours. They scored 18 goals in four matches, winning them all to progress with ease. Dundee United also qualified, though with less certainty. They were beaten by Falkirk in their opening match, and though they won their remaining three games to progress, their performances against lower-league opponents Ayr, Buckie Thistle and Stenhousemuir were hardly emphatic.

Lawrence Shankland: The Hearts Striker Topping the SPFL Scoring Charts

Tony Docherty’s visiting side have failed to win any of their last six against United and have not won at Tannadice since 2004, 12 trips ago, yet they are well placed to end that hoodoo now. Both teams, meanwhile, have been scoring freely in their early matches this term, and with neither defence looking particularly robust, this seems to point to a game that will provide both entertainment and goals.

That has not always been the norm in the Dundee derby, with the 2-2 draw played out in April 2022, the last meeting between the clubs, an exception in recent times. Prior to that, there were four successive games with Under 2.5 goals.

Prediction:

Dundee (+1) @ 1.53

Over 2.5 goals @ 1.85

Goal stats: Murray likeliest but Holt best value

Murray is the likeliest man to get on the scoresheet against his former club. The Dundee striker is priced at 2.4 to net anytime and 5.0 to score first, which given that he struck 16 Premiership goals in 38 matches (including two in the playoffs) for Ross County last season looks like excellent value.

Bojan Miovski: Aberdeen’s North Macedonian Talisman

The 32-year-old should receive just as many chances with his new team and has already settled in with promise. In his two starts for Dundee, he has bagged doubles against both Annan and Inverness, and while these are both comparatively weak opponents as they played in League One, it sets the striker up nicely going into the really serious stuff.

There is value to be found in the scoring market for Dundee United, too. Louis Moult is considered their leading prospect to net at 3.0, but after a quiet League Cup campaign, other options, including new signing Jort van der Sande should be considered. The Dutchman has yet to debut but much is expected of him both in terms of scoring and creating.

Another new addition in the form of winger Kristijan Trapanovski offers promise as scoring three in the League Cup. The North Macedonian, though, has not played more than 68 minutes in any individual match, hinting that he is not quiet at his full capacity. He is getting fitter, though, and at 4.0 would appear to offer value.

Celtic’s Dominance In Scotland Bodes Poorly In Europe

Finally, Kevin Holt looks a very long price at 10.0 to score anytime. The centre-back already has two goals for the season and finished last term with six goals in 31 Championship matches and eight in 38 overall. His threat from set pieces is significant and his price is a big one considering this menace he possesses.

Predictions:

Simon Murry to score anytime @ 2.4

Kevin Holt to score anytime @ 10.0

Card stats: Expect a flurry of yellow

Dundee derbies are typically hard-fought affairs, and it would come as a significant surprise if this season-opening affair was to be any different. When the clubs were last in the same league together in the 2021/22 campaign, their encounters produced a total of 11 yellows, though the average figure was driven down by a game in which there was just one caution. In three of the last four, there have been at least four cards shown.

We Need More Players in Football like Todd Cantwell

With David Dickinson slated to be the referee for Sunday, this average is likely to be maintained. In his 17 Premiership matches last term, he showed a total of 71 cards at an average of 4.18 per game. He has started this campaign in a similar vein, with 13 cards shown across the three matches he has overseen in all competitions. However, if cards are probable, who is likely to see them?

Moult should be considered a strong contender for Dundee United, having seen eight last season. Another contender to trouble the referee among the Terrors’ ranks is Vicko Sevelj, who will be making his Premiership debut. He was booked twice in the League Cup and will be one of the men charged with keeping Murray quiet.

Many Dundee’s most prolific criminals from last season have all departed, yet combative midfielder Luke McCowan remains and will be the player eyes are upon to receive a card in this clash. He picked up 10 in total last term, including nine yellows and one red.

Predictions:

Over 3.5 cards @ 1.53

Luke McCowan to be shown a card @ 4.33
